Downtown congratulates country singer and songwriter Sturgill Simpson on his third studio album, A Sailor's Guide to Earth, which has sailed to # 1 on the Country, Rock, Folk, Tastemaker, and Vinyl album charts, and hit # 3 on the Billboard 200, right under the late Prince’s leading two spots - a remarkable accomplishment for a top album that only has one writer.
The album, addressed to his two year old son, serves as the boy’s own pocket atlas for navigating the world. With influences from Memphis sax, New Orleans brass, and '60s soul, Simpson effortlessly mixes sounds to create an uplifting piece of work that cultivates his artistic talent.
A Sailor's Guide to Earth pays homage to the great outlaw country singers, Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson, and even tributes the late Kurt Cobain with a beautiful rendition of one of Nirvana's most famous songs, "In Bloom". "Brace For Impact (Live a Little)", the single, creates a great entry way into the psychedelic, inspiring, and genre-bending world that is A Sailor’s Guide to Earth.
Downtown is proud to represent this talent on his latest endeavor. All songs are represented through Downtown Music Publishing, with the exception of “In Bloom”.
“It’s one of many powerful defiant moments from an artist who is just getting started”
“The album is strikingly intimate. At times it feels like you’re somehow found yourself in the singer’s hallway, listening as he coos lullabies to his child in a nursery”
“Simpson’s writing, too, is fantastic: the eight originals here are all top-notch”.
