  • Business Intelligence Analyst / Manager

    New York

    The Position:

Downtown Music Publishing & Songtrust, a top 10-music publisher and top-10 music startup respectively are looking for our first business intelligence hire. This person will help us better serve our writers (Bruce Springsteen, Meghan Trainor, Santigold, John Lennon & Yoko Ono, Hans Zimmer, Motley Crue, to name a few) through improved processes and analysis.

In this role you will work independently across the entire company with many teams – including artists & repertoire/writer relations, operations, product/engineering, finance, royalties, and more. You’ll help make people more efficient through building tools to get data out of silos, creating and maintaining KPI dashboards/reports, teaching best practices, supporting complex queries, and learning and defining our data dictionaries.

    Requirements:

    • 1-5+ years experience in a business intelligence role in consulting, financial services, technology, startup, or other data intensive organizations.
    • You should be able to thrive in an environment with a number of RDBMS in production (MSSQL, Postgres), huge csv/xls files (1MM+ rows), and other flat files.
    • You should know how to get things done in SQL, views, periodic metrics, imports, and exports – in short, data wrangling is your jam. You’ll have a solid understanding of RDBMS’s and data normalization concepts.
    • You can translate business questions into analysis and understand complex systems. You can really think through a problem, understanding the corner cases and be able to thoughtfully explain why what they are asking may not be accurately answered with some results given the complexity of our business logic.
    • You have an eye for data visualization and can design useful, maintainable KPI dashboards and reports.

A few examples of what you might work on:

    • Our operations and royalties team would like to figure out how long it takes us to deliver songs to a certain service (think Amazon Music, YouTube, etc.) and then later, whether or not they actually paid us correctly within the span of a standard deviation.
    • We just signed a large new song catalog, but unfortunately, the data is poorly structured. You would help our copyright team cleanse bad characters, add some alternate titles (think “the love song” vs “Love Song, The”) and help them ingest the catalog into our database.
    • Our CEO has a burning question about how we are doing in XYZ, or wants to start measuring something a team is doing. You’ll figure out how to deliver data to marketing teams or division heads to create reports that help us focus and grow the business.
    • A 3rd party needs some of our songs so they can use them in bulk, and they need the catalog delivered in a specific format. You’ll create re-usable and adaptable tools to deliver our information to others.

    Bonus skills/Nice to haves:

    • Basic programming skills: Python and other scripting languages would be great, Git, understanding of how to get a server running, etc. Experience with Jupyter notebook would be cool too.
    • Experience with Chartio or other off-the-shelf BI tools (Crystal Reports, Tableau, Looker, PowerBI, etc.)
    • Basic data science / statistical analysis skills
    • Prior experience with Salesforce, Hubspot, Google Analytics, Adwords
    • MS Access: Our royalties files tend to break excel at some point, and Access tends to be a decent operational data store.
    • Jupyter/ipython Notebook (or equivalent data workflow management skills)
    • Experience with Data Warehouses / ETL / Integration tools (Jitterbit/Snaplogic/Tableau’s tools, etc. – we don’t use anything right now, but it has been considered)
    • Knowledge of snowflake schemas / slowly-changing dimensions / metrics design

    Perks

    • Amazing loft office space in SoHo, New York
    • Comprehensive EPO health plan & 401 (k)
    • Commuter program & Free Citibike Membership
    • Music freebies (shows, the occasional vinyl)

    Salary:  Depending on experience.
