Variety recently published its third annual “Hitmakers” issue, recognizing the songwriters, producers, and industry leaders who helped create and break this year’s 25 most-consumed hits — as reported by analytics firm BuzzAngle Music. In addition to fellow Downtown clients Anthony Rossomando and Jimmy Napes, both featured Hitmakers, Ryan Tedder was honored as Variety’s Songwriter of Year for his work on smashes like the Jonas Brothers’ GRAMMY-nominated single “Sucker” and for producing and starring in NBC’s songwriting competition series, Songland.
At the Variety Hitmakers Brunch on Saturday, December 7 at Soho House West Hollywood, Ryan was presented with the award by Lil Nas X — who released the year’s topmost-consumed song and subsequently worked with Ryan on “Bring U Down” from his debut 2019 EP, 7, up for album of the year at the 62nd Annual GRAMMY Awards. Together, they shared the story of first meeting to collaborate on the same day that Lil Nas’ “Old Town Road” hit number one, detailing how Ryan helped the new artist recognize his vision of following up the country-rap hybrid with something new and unexpected.
“He helped me bring my vision to life and I’m super thankful for him,” said the 20-year-old rapper. “I hadn’t worked with many people at that point, and he was nothing but welcoming, encouraging, and supportive of my ideas… I know he has many more decades of songwriting amazingness to come.”
In addition to “Bring U Down” and “Sucker,” Ryan also contributed to numerous other celebrated 2019 titles including several additional cuts from the Jonas Brothers’ acclaimed LP Happiness Begins, which he executive produced — as well as Thomas Rhett’s Best Country Album GRAMMY-contender Center Point Road, P!nk’s "Can We Pretend" from her number one album Hurts 2B Human, and a string of singles by his own band, OneRepublic. The decorated creator also received the National Music Publishers' Association's coveted Songwriter Icon Award during its Annual Meeting earlier this year.
British singer, songwriter, and record producer Jimmy Napes — also dubbed Songwriter of the Year at the U.K.’s A&R Awards 2019 — was selected as a Hitmaker in the Variety feature for his work on longtime collaborator Sam Smith’s “Dancing With a Stranger” featuring Normani. The hit single reached number one on both the Billboard Radio Songs and Adult Top 40 charts, number two on the Mainstream Top 40 Chart, number three on the U.K. Singles Chart, and peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100. Jimmy also co-wrote the 2019 U.K. top 10 Stormzy song “Crown.”
Finally, also recognized as a Hitmaker by Variety, the accolades continue to roll in for Anthony Rossomando — co-writer of the massive hit “Shallow” from the 2018 blockbuster film A Star Is Born. The celebrated ballad racked up a plethora of awards since its release, including two GRAMMYs, an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and a Critics' Choice Award. The soundtrack on which it was featured also received an additional GRAMMY nomination for Best Compilation Soundtrack For Visual Media at the upcoming ceremony.
Downtown congratulates all of this year's Hitmakers.
