Born James Napier, British singer, songwriter, and record producer Jimmy Napes is renowned for his work with A-list talent like Mary J. Blige, Madonna, Alicia Keys, Ellie Goulding, Rita Ora, Ray BLK, Naughty Boy, and more. Dubbed “pop’s number one songwriter” by Billboard, he has contributed to countless hits — including the 2019 Stormzy single “Crown” and Sam Smith’s number one radio smash “Dancing With a Stranger” featuring Normani.
As Smith’s key collaborator, Napes has played a major role in his career — co-writing other popular songs like “I’m Not the Only One,” “Too Good at Goodbyes,” and “Pray.” In 2015, Napes and Smith shared two GRAMMY Awards for Record of the Year with “Stay With Me” and Best Pop Vocal Album for Smith’s debut, In The Lonely Hour. In 2016, he took home awards from the Oscars and the Golden Globes in the category of Best Original Song for his work on Smith’s “Writing’s On The Wall,” the only James Bond theme to ever achieve a UK number one single position. He continues to collaborate with Smith, contributing to 11 out of 14 songs on his latest album, Thrill Of It All — which debuted at number one in numerous countries, including the US and UK.
In 2015, Napes won two Ivor Novello awards for Most Performed Work and Best Contemporary Song as a result of his co-writing on Clean Bandit’s “Rather Be” featuring Jess Glynne. He has also worked extensively with electronic music duo Disclosure, contributing heavily to their debut studio album, Settle (including the lead single “Latch” featuring Sam Smith), as well as their sophomore follow-up, Caracal — which were both nominated for Best Dance/Electronica Album at the 2014 and 2016 GRAMMY Awards, respectively.
