Jesse Cohen and Eric Emm came together to form Tanlines in 2008. The pair met while Emm was working as a producer for Cohen’s dance punk band, Professor Murder.
During the next two years the duo honed their blend of pop/indie/dance/world music releasing a split EP “S.A.W.” alongside the experimental band Salem, their first full EP, “Settings”, and several remixes for bands like Bombay Bicycle Club, Glasser, The Tough Alliance, and Au Revoir Simone.
Their debut album, Mixed Emotions, reached #2 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and #8 on the Dance/Electronic chart after its release in March 2012.
Pitchfork wrote, “Mixed Emotions contains some truly great tracks that work terrifically as standalone singles, as carefully composed and satisfying as a well-constructed quip, almost always augmented by a good-natured undercurrent of earnest, welcome sentimentality.” SPIN Magazine adds, “This isn’t another Brooklyn band’s anemic coming-of-age story, but rather a lighthearted, sunlit spotlight on the bittersweet transition between post-adolescence and actual just-trying-to-figure-it-all-out adulthood.”
